Professional Business Women, More to Think About!

Some people don’t get it. They don’t truly understand how important each person is. They don’t value the power of networking. And they don’t know how to network well, which is probably why the blog, “Networking blog April 2014 picfor Dummies: 4 Habits Your Contacts Hate” was written.

Rather than focus on those four negatives, let’s turn them upside down, and see the positive things you can do to build your network.

1.Treat everyone as if they are important. This is true regardless of their title, age, or circumstance. Every person has their own story and their own connections—and we could probably benefit from both.

2.Build your relationships with others as a matter of course. It can be as natural as breathing—because we are hard wired to respond to and need other people. Building our network of relationships is not something to be avoided or put off. We can’t do it alone, no matter how hard we try.

3.Reach out to people who are different than you are. Don’t limit your contacts to clones. Yes, I agree it’s nice to have friends who are like us and see things as we do. But we will be vastly richer if we learn how to view the world through other perspectives and see things in ways we haven’t experienced before.

4.We forget how vital follow up is. Out of sight, out of mind applies to old friends as well as new ones. We need to keep in touch, to reach out to each other. This requires consistent and persistent touch points. If we don’t, our relationships will not develop into deeper ones, but will wither and die.

I’m not saying it’s easy. In fact, I know it can be difficult to contact people as often as we think we should. But I firmly believe that relationship building is crucial to success in any aspect of business.

Thanks to social media, most of us have lots of connections. But we can also blame social media because it has made it so easy to increase the number of our connections that we tend to neglect those truly important people in our lives. How do we make sure those people who really matter to us and can impact the quality of our lives are contacted with any degree of frequency?  Make sure your efforts include face-to-face as well as online.  Up close and personal gets you win win results.
