The Integrity Niggle

This month’s article is about creating awareness.  It’s important that we are aware when we aren’t fully in integrity.

Oh, I know, you’re always in integrity right?  Well…Ok.  Have you ever had a tiny little niggle in your stomach when you said something?  How about when you write?  Or when you make a promise?  That little tiny niggle or even the little saboteur in your brain that’s questioning you…those are signs that you are out of integrity.

Just bear with me here and do an integrity check with yourself.  If you pass, then great!!  If not, it doesn’t mean you’re a horrible person.  It just means that you aren’t yet aware of where you are out of integrity.  Now is your opportunity to change that, easily.

So, how do you do an integrity check?

Get a journal, notepad or notebook.  Something you can carry with you and easily jot down notes in.  Spend the next 2 weeks looking for the following 2 little integrity warning signs:

  1. A little niggle, flutter, roll, or off feeling in your stomach.  This is a physical warning sign that something is amiss.  The bigger the feeling the more off you are.  Usually we correct the big ones, but it’s hard to notice the little itty bitty niggles unless you’re looking for them.  So, pay close attention!
  2. A throat catch.  If you’re talking to someone you might be in the middle of a sentence and suddenly there’s something in your throat and you have to stop talking to clear it.  Unless you have allergies or a cold, this is a warning sign that you may want to look at what you are saying.

Whenever you notice one of these, add to your journal what you were trying to say, write etc… ASAP.  Then take some time, every day you have a note and sit with whatever it was you were trying to put out into the world.  What was that niggle or catch about?  Where might you be able to make one small, tiny adjustment that could increase your integrity?  Write that down and keep rereading it to remind you of what you need to do.

Be in integrity.  Listen to what your body is telling you.  It knows when something is off, but if you don’t pay attention, you might miss the little things that add up.
