For many it’s counterintuitive. For others it sounds like a cop out. However, for the wise and wonderful, it’s a skill that improves productivity, strengthens your support network, and creates opportunities for you and others to do the work that brings the most joy.

Humans have been delegating tasks to others for millions of years. So what’s the big deal?  Simply stated, Delegating with an appreciation for the contribution of others gives you the chance to focus on tasks that you do best or that you enjoy doing the most.  It will give you more time to set and achieve larger goals for your own professional development. Plus it gives others the opportunity to use their special talents to grow and be appreciated. Instead of getting bogged down with dozens of ‘To Do List’ items, you’ll create a winning environment while reducing your work load and allowing others to shine.

Some believe that delegating work means dumping on others. Wrong! Delegation shouldn’t be a random assignment of mundane tasks to anyone who just happens to be available. It’s important to  assess the strengths, weaknesses, and previous experience of others in your support network. Then, match the person with tasks that give each the opportunity to put their strengths to good use.

A colleague of mine has a wonderful way of finding just the right person to whom to delegate. While networking or socializing she asks others, “ What kind of work do you most enjoy doing? “ and “”Why do you enjoy doing it?”  Then she asks them to show her some of their best work.

These comfortable conversations instantly endear her to others because she takes a genuine interest in them and their career goals. It also gives them an opportunity to show off their accomplishments.  It creates an authentic win-win relationship because she learns exactly which tasks can be delegated to whom. She allows others to feel valued for their ability and contributions. Of course she lets them know what they can delegate to her too.

Now you can have it all without doing it all too!  Simply Delegate to Elevate. You’ll give yourself more time to focus on the work that brings you the greatest satisfaction while giving others opportunities to do the work that brings them satisfaction.
