Problems Scream for Attention
“The job of a problem is to get your attention.” Wendy Ellin
Did you ever stop to consider that problems have jobs? Well, the more I thought about Wendy’s comment, the more sense it made. Think about it. For example. You don’t get along with a colleague at work. (problem) And, it sure draws your attention with every interaction. Overweight? (problem). When you can’t fit into your favorite outfit, something tells you it’s a hint that your health needs improvement. You simply don’t have a large enough pipeline from which to draw possible business. (problem). Do you think that just might mean more networking? You’re stressed from working long hours. (problem). Maybe this suggests taking a look at a more balanced lifestyle?
I find the entire concept fascinating. In my mind I tested a lot of scenarios. And, in every case – every problem drew me in and warrants my attention! For me, this was huge insight. Recognize a problem you’re facing right now. Does it call your attention? Does it need to get resolved? Is it causing you anxiety? Even having a messy desk is a problem? Solution? Get organized!
I really hope this insight helps you deal with future issues by handling them productively. I realize now that the minute I face the next problem, I have to go into ‘solution’ mode. Problems do cause us to pay attention. Ever hear the expression, “What you resist persists?” Well, the same is true here. Let a problem live on and it will never disappear.
