Pursuit of Happiness

Every now and then I will come across an article that stays in my mind long afterward. When I recently read a story about Michael J. Fox (actor in Family Ties), I was particularly moved by his philosophy on life.  Living with Parkinson’s disease, he continues to pursue his career, wrote a book and has become a huge advocate for research through his foundation.  I decide to capture the essence of his 7 seven point plan to ensure that he leads a happy, productive and healthy life.

Slide1

  1. Accept what you can’t change. Life, after all, is what it is. There are some things, situations that one simply cannot alter. For me, personally, dealing with the unavoidable has taught me to be creative, resilient and to appreciate what I can do. I actually find I worry less when I have a positive attitude.
  2. Practice patience. If you are like me, this is a tough one. Bad customer service annoys me. Inconsiderate drivers annoy me. Indecisiveness annoys me. There just seems to be so many times that I (and likely, you, too) have to stop, breathe and accept that exercising patience is just part of life. Know that you’re not alone in dealing with patience. It’s worth facing issues with resolve, however.
  3. Embrace family ties. When it comes to relationships, loving, respecting and appreciating family has always served me well. If you are dealing with a stressful family issue, consider ways to get it resolved. Maybe counseling would help. Maybe writing a letter. Family is still family, even under difficult times. Healing and forgiveness are life changing.
  4. Let go of judgment. In Michael’s own words, “When there’s no good or bad, right or wrong, it just is what it is.” Every individual is unique. By replacing judgment with understanding, we can embrace a fresh approach and let others lead the lives of their choosing, just as we are choosing our own.
  5. Turn liabilities into assets. Any shortcoming can be motivating if one is committed to overcoming the condition or situation. When I read about someone that has challenges or see someone dealing with disabilities, I am often moved by the way they go on to lead productive lives. The Special Olympics is an example. There are people who will say, “Excuses don’t count.” Do what you can. Take a positive approach to life. The key is to capitalize on one’s strengths.
  6. Say “YES”. Take risks. Stretch to achieve new possibilities. Be courageous. Be open to opportunities. Risk is where change occurs. And change is necessary for progress. You simply never know what can result from being open-minded!
  7. Live well. There are elements in life that we can control. Eating healthy, exercising often, creating nurturing relationships and paying it forward are examples of having a great life. It’s never too late to replace bad habits with productive ones. It’s never too late to assess one’s life and to make changes that are positive.

Michael’s seven steps in the pursuit of happiness may not all be simple to achieve.  However, committing to make changes that are in your control is certainly in your best interest.  If you start today, surely you will improve tomorrow.  That’s a choice you can choose.
