Women Owned Businesses|What It Takes
Isn’t it amazing how reading a book has the potential to change the way one looks at life (and within)? Not long ago, I was gifted The Confidence Code, by Katty Kay & Claire Shipman. Devouring that
book had a major impact on me! Based on major research and hundreds of interviews, Katty and Claire came up with many examples and studies reinforcing the following fact: Being competent is NOT the same as being confident. I actually previously thought that the two go hand in hand. Wrong.
Competency is skills based. Confidence is based on internal acceptance – how you feel about yourself. Doing a job well, peak performance and leadership are all related to competency. All of us get recognized in some way when tasks, teamwork and accomplishments occur successfully. Competency can actually be measured based on specific standards. Examples such as being promoted, passing exams that increase credentials and employment opportunities as well as athletic excellence are all competency related.
When one possesses confidence, it’s an internal sense of well-being. If you can comfortably voice a contradictory opinion, deal with naysayers and step out of your comfort zone, it’s generally an indicator that you are confident. I can do that. I’m not concerned about what others think. I am ready to take on a new job, task or a higher level of responsibility. Being confident opens the door to unlimited possibilities. Competency relates to a specific task or tasks.
The website, www.TheConfidenceCode.com provides valuable information including a confidence self-test. The site and measurement tool are both helpful in your getting a handle on what you already feel great about and what you can do to accelerate your confidence. I highly recommend Katty and Claire’s publication and website. You will be glad you took me up on the suggestion.
