ROSWELL, GA (May 5, 2013)—The Powerhouse Self-Defense Program, established in November of 2011, is on its mission to empower and educate hundreds of girls and women across the United States. Of these hundreds of women and girls served by Powerhouse, the Girl Scouts USA has consistently used the Powerhouse Self-Defense Program as their number one source for education on awareness and personal safety, building courage and confidence. Because of this special and strong relationship, Powerhouse Self-Defense has developed its “Rise Up and Empower” Initiative for Girl Scouts in High School (Seniors and Ambassadors).

The “Rise Up and Empower” Initiative is based on the three pillars approach to Leadership that is used by Girl Scouts USA. Through the Personal Safety & Empowerment Program, the girls will discover their hidden strengths and confidence. They will experience a strong sense of self-worth, self-esteem and a compassion for others. The girls will connect not only with their peers, but with members of the community. The girls will take action. Having built up their own courage, confidence and character, they will be equipped to enable others to feel empowered.

Once trained, the girls will assist Powerhouse Self-Defense Head Instructors in workshops provided to Girl Scouts Troops and the community. Additionally they will learn about the Powerhouse Self-Defense business, including how to network and coordinate workshops. If the girls decide to make Self-Defense a topic for their Gold Awards, Powerhouse Self-Defense will provide them with the resources and mentoring needed to achieve their awards. On leaving High School, the girls will become Certified Head Instructors, giving them the expertise and qualifications to provide the Powerhouse Self-Defense workshops on their college campuses. In doing, so they will be carrying out part of the Powerhouse Self- Defense mission to make college campuses safer.

Jennifer Riis-Poulsen, Founder & CEO and also a 2nd degree black belt, formed Powerhouse Self-Defense as a response to the ever-increasing statistics on the number of females attacked and sexually assaulted each year. She made reducing these statistics a passion and personal goal and has set out to develop a comprehensive self-defense and empowerment program focused on awareness and powerful techniques to build courage and confidence. The curriculum is based on her 12 years of martial arts experience and is designed for all females from 12 years of age and above.

“I want to make a difference. I have the expertise to help reduce these statistics by making females more aware of their surroundings and empowering them through my self-defense and empowerment workshops. This has become my mission.” –Jennifer Riis-Poulsen
